Alaskapox, a relatively rare virus causing mild illnesses, has been present in Alaska for nine years. Recently, a man’s death from the virus has drawn significant attention to it.
Alaskapox belongs to a family of brick-shaped viruses known as orthopoxviruses, which can infect both animals and humans. These viruses typically cause skin lesions or pox. Alaskapox was discovered in 2015 in a woman residing near Fairbanks, Alaska. It primarily affects small mammals such as red-backed voles and shrews, but pets like dogs and cats may also carry the virus.
Individuals infected with Alaskapox typically develop one or more bumps or pustules on the skin, accompanied by joint or muscle pain and swollen lymph nodes. Most patients experience mild illnesses that resolve within a few weeks, but individuals with weakened immune systems are at risk of more severe illness.
Health officials believe that Alaskapox spreads through contact with infected animals. While there have been no documented cases of human-to-human transmission, caution is advised, as other viruses in the same family can spread through contact with lesions. Covering any Alaskapox lesions with a bandage is recommended by Alaska health officials.
The recent case marks the first known fatality from Alaskapox. The elderly man, residing in the Kenai Peninsula, had a suppressed immune system due to cancer treatment. He developed symptoms, including a red sore under his right armpit, and sought medical attention over the subsequent months. Despite hospitalization, he passed away last month. The man had been scratched by a stray cat that frequented his forested area residence.
While Alaskapox typically causes mild symptoms, precautions should be taken when interacting with wildlife. Health officials recommend maintaining a safe distance from wildlife, washing hands after outdoor activities, and refraining from keeping wildlife as pets.
In a tragic turn of events, an elderly man from the US has become the initial recorded victim to succumb to Alaskapox, a virus closely linked to smallpox. With only seven reported cases since 2015, the emergence of this virus in Fairbanks, Alaska, has raised concerns and questions among the scientific community.
Alaskapox, or AKPV, is transmitted from small rodents to humans, causing mild symptoms such as small skin lesions, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle pain. Despite its rarity, the virus recently claimed the life of an immunocompromised cancer patient in late January, shedding light on its potentially severe consequences.
The deceased individual lived in solitude on Alaska’s remote Kenai Peninsula, and it is believed he might have contracted the virus through a scratch from a stray cat. This unique case underscores the importance of understanding the transmission dynamics of Alaskapox, particularly in isolated regions.
Complications arose for the patient when one of his skin lesions became infected, leading to kidney failure and, ultimately, death. This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of monitoring and promptly treating even seemingly minor symptoms of Alaskapox, especially in individuals with compromised immune systems.
Despite concerns, there is currently no evidence supporting human-to-human transmission of Alaskapox. However, health officials in Alaska are urging caution and advising individuals to cover skin lesions with bandages as a preemptive measure.
The state’s department of health issued a warning, suggesting that domestic pets like cats and dogs may also play a role in the transmission of the virus. While the primary source of transmission is small rodents, uncertainties persist, as patients have reported bites from spiders, cats, or dogs.
Though the mode of transmission remains unclear, health officials emphasize the importance of being vigilant when interacting with wildlife. Precautions such as careful handwashing with soap or alcohol-based products can mitigate the risk of infection. Recognizing the signs of infection is equally vital for early intervention.
